Escritura Acto/The Poetics of Live Writing

with Casa Cruz de la Luna Theater Company

Focusing on “escritura acto”-or the act of live computerized writing projected onstage- this workshop will develop  a consciousness of the performer as another medium (medio, mediumnidad) interacting physically and energetically with other mediums (actors, spectators, objects, apparatuses, locations, programs) in performance.  Exercises will explore the different mechanisms for generating tension through escritura acto, such as:  disjunction (writing one content while speaking another); precognition (playing with expectations on how words and sentences are going to be completed): body kinetic responses to the writing as it is being produced; and the movement of texts through translation / dictation / reading /copying chains. The lab process will culminate in a presentation open to the public on the last day of class.

Requisites:

-18 years and older (we will also have a workshop for younger participants, stay tuned)

-Participants should be able to attend the 6 sessions since the work is cumulative and leading to a final performance.

-Participants will be asked to memorize short texts as assignments.

-Especially useful for theatre makers; performance, visual and sound artists; writers; students focused on literature and/or the performing arts; and people interested in transmedia narratives

Originally based in an old house in the historical district of the town of San Germán in the Southwest of Puerto Rico, Casa Cruz de la Luna, has as its mission the continuous study of the limits of the theatrical experience. Founded in 1998 by Aravind Enrique Adyanthaya, the group has engaged in experimental stagings of classical works by Jorge Luis Borges, Cervantes, García Lorca, Oscar Wilde and  Maeterlinck, as well as the development of new plays by Puerto Rican authors such as José “Pepe” Liboy, Mayra Santos Febres, Carlos Canales, Jaime Carrero, Fátima Santana, Lina Nieves Avilés and Manuel Ramos Otero.

Desde el 1999, la Casa ha crecido como foro donde discursos sobre arte, sociedad y teoría se materializan a través de conferencias, exposiciones, talleres, proyectos de investigación y puestas escénicas. Theatre workshop for community members: Pa’ la calle!!
– 16 +, open to public in general

5 hours, English and/or Spanish, maximum capacity: 10-15 people
– site specific work
– street theatre techniques
– object manipulation
– corporal mime training techniques
This is an introductory workshop and it’s open for people without any experience. Artists will work with basic concepts of each technique. On the other hand, if you have previous experience, the artists will guide, council and help you apply these tools to facilitate your creative process.

About Vueltabajo:
The transdisciplinary art collective now working in Puerto Rico adopts the name Vueltabajo Teatro in Barcelona, Catalunya in 2012. It was born with the initiative of re-habilitating and activating a space: Magatzem Voltaire in Poble Sec, dedicated to art investigation and production. Its creative collaborators have been working together for more than 10 years now. The collective has developed methods of creating repertoire based on “practice as research” (presentations, residencies and laboratories). Each artist creates a seed (concept) and together research the use of diverse tools: physical theatre, movement, performance, street theatre, visual arts, media experimentation, music, site-specific.
About Narices Negras:

Concept:
A duet of characters that stumble upon everyday situations use their imagination to create worlds that help them cope with their routines. Common household chores are taken to the street, making the personal habits public, as something very natural. Narices Negras are nomads, floating on the frontier.
The performers use street theatre techniques, clown and corporal mime to shape their training. Improvisation and site-specific work is essential during the creation and investigation process for further developing the characters, thus the piece itself.

Join Flux Theatre Ensemble’s unique play development process and vibrant artist community for their weekly workshop, Flux Sundays. Once a week, up to 30 theatre artists gather for three hours in the afternoon to lightly stage new scenes from playwrights in the community. Not a theatre artist, but want to get involved? Feel free to join us for the final hour of Flux Sundays, where we share all of the scenes, and see plays in their earliest stages of development brought to vivid life by a welcoming community of artists.

The Salvage Project:

Behind every special object we keep, there’s something even more important: a story.

Flux Theatre Ensemble’s The Salvage Project is a series of story-circles where communities come together to share stories about the precious objects of their lives. Through the sharing of these stories, we’ll learn what matters most to the people with whom we share this city and why. The Salvage Project culminates in a free, full-length production of the world premiere play Salvage, which imagines a band of searchers looking for precious objects left behind in a post-catastrophe NYC. Interested participants in The Salvage Project will have the option of sharing their object as part of the scenic design of the production, as well as opportunities to have their stories transformed by professional playwrights into short monologues. Stories and objects may also shared as part of The Salvage Project blog.

Since 2006, Flux has produced 20 productions and countless readings and developmental projects. Making Music with Everyday Objects

Saturday, November 22nd at 3:00pm

Join the amazing and dynamic musical duo Acopladitos for an interactive musical experience as you create your own musical instruments using recycled materials during an exiting music/art making session. This 90-minute workshop will be structured in the format of Loisaida Center’s one-time specialized workshop or talk program the X-Change Express.

Acopladitos will demonstrate how to make a variety of musical instruments using everyday objects, especially those found at home. They will share with the audience their playful approach to the idea of “sound explorations.” More than making your own instruments, Acopladitos will share some musical ideas to guide the audience through a creative composition process that the entire family can practice at home. The last portion of the talk consists of a “hands on” approach to music making where the audience will have the opportunity of playing the instruments.

Acopladitos is dedicated to teaching Spanish language through music and movement to young learners.

This events is open to a general audience, but will specifically benefit early childhood teachers and parents.

About Acopladitos:

Acopladitos is a Spanish immersion music program for young children. The word “acopladitos” in
Spanish can be translated to mean “being together in complete harmony” and refers to much more than
just music. The program is designed to cultivate the child’s first musical encounters through singing,
creative movement, music-making, games and dramatic play. A presentation by
Acopladitos incorporates charming original songs with a repertoire of popular Latin American children’s
songs. Designed and led by composer Angelica Negrón and ethno-musicologist Noraliz Ruiz, the
program was created to fill a void in early childhood Spanish-language music education in NYC. This
team of Brooklyn-based experienced educators and creative artists will engage the children in a
collaborative and exciting musical experience that will nurture their artistic, intellectual, physical and
social-emotional development. We are interested in collaborating with Loisaida Center in order to bring
fun and interactive programming to the children of Loisaida and reach out to the community at large.

INTRODUCTION TO PRIMO DRUM

Workshop description:

This workshop will be about dance interpretation using the language and drum of Puerto Rico’s Bomba. We will be discussing what is needed in preparing for your quest into primo drum playing and will be going over basic variations and language used during improvisation. We will also be diving in hands on with examples of different forms of looking at interpreting dance. Finalizing with ways of adding your own individuality and energy to the equation. Join the Bomba community through movement and song!!!

Bring your own drum/conga/djembe

Requirements: Basic knowledge of Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba rhythms a plus! No one will be turn away for lack of skills.

Bio:
Rafael Maya Alvarez was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico. He is the founder and director of Desde Cero and founder and director of Proyecto Union. Rafael also has participated in Bomba groups such as Majestad Negra(Member and Coreographer), Compania Folklorica De Loiza, Restauracion Cultural(VP, Co-Director), Tambuye, Tendencias(Co-Director), Carabali, Sabor a Bomba, Fiesta Bombera, Son de Plena, y Bomba Tour. Rafael is currently teaching with the project Gigantes de la Bomba who offers classes twice a week in the Plaza de Recreo of Carolina and to schools in the Municipality of Carolina. Rafael has participated as an instructor in programs such as “Vida Plena”, “Head Start,” “Upward Bound”, “Taller Fotoperiodismo”, “Instituto de Cultura Puertorriquena”, “Program of continued education”, “Early Start” and “Bomba de Oro”. Rafael also gives bilingual Bomba workshops for the Univeristy of Puerto Rico’s(Rio Piedras campus) exchange student program and is currently giving class in The U.N.E. University(Carolina). He was invited and gave his latest Master Class in Berkeley College of Music in Valencia, Spain. For several years he was one of the dance and percussion instructors for the Corporacion Pinones se Integra in Loiza an also for Arthur Murray Dance Studio is Santurce. Rafael has travelled to numerous countries providing lectures and performing, because for Rafael, the most important element in his work is cultural education.
