Advocate of the Loisaida Streets: The Activist Legacy of Tato Laviera

City Lore 56 East 1st Street, New York, NY, United States

Nuyorican poet pioneer Tato Laviera is well-known for his artistic contribution to the literary canon, but Tato really got his start working for various community organizations on the Lower East Side where he championed his Loisaida family.

This program will feature a screening of CENTRO’s documentary, AmeRican, directed by Vivian Hernandez-Ortiz, followed by a discussion with artists and activists who worked with Tato.

In partnership with the Tato Laviera Foundation, the Loisaida Center and CENTRO.

East Side Tree Care Demonstration & Community Planting/East Side Street Tree Survey

Avenue B (between E 8th St & E 9th St) New York, NY, United States

Join us on Earth Day, April 22, at 11:30 a.m. on Avenue B for a tree care demonstration and community planting! Our office will take part in Avenue B Open Street programming during Car Free Earth Day. We will meet on Avenue B between E 8 and E 9. Sign-up for a street tree care demonstration and community planting that will take place as part of the Car Free Earth Day Avenue B Open Street programming: bit.ly/434136I

The demonstration and planting will mark the kick-off of the East Side Street Tree Survey. We are looking for volunteers to assist with surveying the street trees and tree beds in Council District 2! Some of the questions will be: whether the tree is there, concerns about health, is there a tree guard, are there rat burrows, is there litter and what type, and is there signage.

There are about 693,000 street trees lining the sidewalks of New York City, which provide various environmental, economic, and health benefits. 22% of the city is covered by the urban canopy, which totals about 7 million trees, and advocates like Forest for All NYC are calling for 30% coverage by 2035. This survey will help inform City agencies about the conditions of the street trees in our neighborhoods.

If you are interested in volunteering, please sign up here: bit.ly/3EddH8I
