MAPPING FROM OUTSIDE TO THE INSIDE

August 26, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Loisaida Inc. and The Little Art Workshop present

MAPPING FROM OUTSIDE TO THE INSIDE:

The program is based on the idea of parting from the largest “object” in our case the Universe, as a starting point and from there begin to construct different visual maps using various artistic approaches. From the “largest” to the “smallest”, from a map of the Universe to a map of our country, city, neighborhood, house and ending by creating a map of our brain. Throughout these workshops we will use different artistic approaches to create our maps, from using our own bodies as representations of “stars” to using more conventional materials such as paint, glue and other crafts. Plus, the children will create maps in both 2 and 3 dimensions.

The program is meant for children starting at 5 years going up to 12, designed for groups up to 10 children per class.

DAY 2 – Saturday, August 26th from 1:00-3:00pm

  • Activity 1: COUNTRY MAP/MAPA DEL PAIS (1:00pm-2:00pm)

Using a cut-out of the United States map, the children will use glue to attach different small objects, such as seeds, sticks, earth, clay, textiles, cotton, etc. to imagine that each material added will give the country a new meaning.

  • Activity 2: HOOD MAP/MAPA DEL BARRIO (2:00pm-3:00pm)

Taking a maxi-formatted map of the Lower East Side, the children will imagine where are the streets, the parks, the boundary. Using pre-cut elements and materials as iconography for the children to place inside their neighborhood map.
