Plena Mayagüezana

Plena music is plena music, but each region of Puerto Rico has given the genre a distinct touch; this workshop will concentrate in the peculiar characteristics of the plena from Mayaguez. While plena is alive and kicking in Puerto Rico, including in Mayaguez, our workshop will focus in the study of those specific characteristics of the Mayaguez-style of plena that are not as well-known or researched as others. This will be a technical workshop, emphasis will be given to drumming techniques, yet, we will also discuss matters of history and the idiosyncrasies of this unique style of plena. As such, not only musicians and drumming enthusiast will benefit from this workshop, but scholars, archivists and researchers as well.
