The demonstration and planting will mark the kick-off of the East Side Street Tree Survey. We are looking for volunteers to assist with surveying the street trees and tree beds in Council District 2! Some of the questions will be: whether the tree is there, concerns about health, is there a tree guard, are there rat burrows, is there litter and what type, and is there signage.
There are about 693,000 street trees lining the sidewalks of New York City, which provide various environmental, economic, and health benefits. 22% of the city is covered by the urban canopy, which totals about 7 million trees, and advocates like Forest for All NYC are calling for 30% coverage by 2035. This survey will help inform City agencies about the conditions of the street trees in our neighborhoods.
