DESCRIPTION:50 Years of Bimbo Rivas “Loisaida”\nDecember 10\, 2024\, 6 ~ 7:15 PM\nThe Loisaida Center710 E 9th StNew York\, NY 10009 \n  \nCo-sponsored by The Loisaida Center \nBimbo Rivas was a Puerto Rican artist and activist who lived and made his mark on the Lower East Side. He played a key role in the Nuyorican Movement and authored the poem “Loisaida\,” which popularized the term and reinforced a sense of cultural identity in the neighborhood. To mark the 50th anniversary of that poem’s publication\, this event will celebrate Bimbo’s life\, work\, and legacy. \nThe program will feature a live performance of the poem by one of his daughters\, with live music by one of Bimbo’s mentees\, Daso\, and a photo montage by the great East Village photographer Marlis Momber. This performance will be followed by an overview of life in the neighborhood at the time of the poem’s publication\, a discussion of Bimbo’s various artistic efforts\, and an assessment of his influence on the Nuyorican Movement. Participants will include some of Bimbo’s relatives\, friends\, and colleagues\, as well as artists who followed in his wake. \n\n\nMaraluna Rivas\nMaraluna Rivas Mico\, daughter of iconic poet Bittman “Bimbo” Rivas\, grew up as the middle child in a family deeply rooted in culture\, activism\, and community. Today\, she is a devoted wife\, mother\, and recent grandmother. A passionate educator with the Board of Education\, Maraluna inspires her community while also working as an actress\, dancer\, and performer. She frequently collaborates with the families and friends of her father’s close companions\, such as Chino Garcia. Deeply influenced by places like Charas/El Bohio\, Maraluna is committed to ensuring these cultural hubs remain accessible\, empowering future generations to connect with Loisaida’s vibrant spirit. Whenever possible\, she loves to recite her father’s poems\, keeping his spirit alive and close to her heart and voice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Soto\nRenowned singer\, songwriter\, community organizer\, and youth advocate David Soto\, known artistically as DāSo\, embarked on his musical odyssey during his formative years\, gracing stages alongside his mother in the esteemed Puerto Rican folkloric dance ensemble\, Grupo Cemí. Raised in the vibrant tapestry of Loisaida\, New York City\, amidst the effervescent cultural milieu of Nuyorican poetry in the early ’70s to ’80s\, DāSo imbibed wisdom from luminaries such as María Hernández\, Bimbo Rivas\, Tato Laviera\, and Luis Guzmán\, refining his artistry through electrifying performances at iconic venues like the Nuyorican Poets Café\, Tompkins Square Park\, intimate community garden soirées\, and CHARAS fundraisers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCaridad De La Luz Caridad De La Luz “LA BRUJA” won an Emmy in 2022 (for ABC’s Cultural Short – Legacy of Puerto Rican Poetry) after becoming the Executive Director of the NUYORICAN POETS CAFE where she began her career in 1996. Winner of the Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship and David Prize finalist\, Caridad balances a career of activism\, education\, entertainment\, and motherhood. She has been one of America’s leading spoken word poets for over 20 years and has received The Edgar Allan Poe Award from The Bronx Historical Society. She was honored as a Bronx Living Legend by The Bronx Music Heritage Center and was named “Top 20 Puerto Rican Women Everyone Should Know”. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJesus Papoleto Melendez\nJesus Papoleto Melendez is one of the founding poets of the Nuyorican poetry movement. Melendez’s poetry collections include Casting Long Shadows (1970)\, Street Poetry & Other Poems (1972)\, Concertos on Market Street (1993)\, and the bilingual volume Hey Yo! Yo Soy! 40 Years of Nuyorican Street Poetry: The Collected Work of Jesús Papoleto Melendez (2012\, volume 1). His work has also been featured in numerous anthologies. His honors include a fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts\, the Louis Reyes Rivera Lifetime Achievement Award\, an Artist for Community Enrichment Award from the Bronx Council on the Arts\, and a joint fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and Combined Arts of San Diego. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBob Holman\nBob Holman is a spoken word performer\, professor\, impresario\, activist\, founder of the Bowery Poetry Club\, filmmaker\, and host of Language Matters (2015 Documentary of the Year\, Berkeley Film Festival). He has been a central figure in redefining poetry as it exists on\, off\, and beyond the page. Dubbed a member of the “Poetry Pantheon” by the New York Times Magazine\, Holman is the author of over 20 poetry collections. He has taught at Princeton University\, Columbia University\, N.Y.U.\, Bard College\, and The New School. As an arts administrator\, he has served as coordinator and curator at St. Mark’s Poetry Project and was the original Slammaster and a director of the Nuyorican Poets Café. A scholar of oral traditions in West Africa and beyond\, Holman co-founded the Endangered Language Alliance\, where he currently serves on the Board of Directors. \n  \n\nEvent Info/RSVP

DESCRIPTION:Street Life\nQueer Activism\, Performance\, and Joy \nThe Photography of Luis Carle\nIn this exhibition\, the noted New York Puerto Rican photographer Luis Carle honors the street—the work of protest\, resistance\, remembrance\, critical gender performance\, and celebration with which queer subjects have infused public spaces\, transforming them. Inspired by the Nuyorican street activist Sylvia Rivera\, who advocated for radical\, gender non-conforming\, intersectional queer communities; Cristina Hayworth\, founder of Puerto Rico’s LGBTQ Pride March; the gender performance artist Oswaldo Gómez\, Ms. Colombia\, who converted city streets into his backstage dressing-room for “cosmically” reimagining everyday life; and Dirty Martini\, whose witty performances critique commercialization and gentrification at a time of imperiled queer civil rights; Carle invites the viewers to join the crowd\, march\, walk\, ride\, dance and put their bodies on the line. Moving from images of the legendary marches on Washington for LGBTQ civil rights\, the AIDS Memorial Quilt\, ACT-UP activism\, and the NYC Drag March to everyday street performances\, performance art\, and celebrations\, Carle’s photographs ask us to reflect on how protest\, performance\, memorialization\, and joy have historically built on each other in queer popular cultures. \nLuis Carle (b. 1962) is a New York-based Puerto Rican photographer living in New York City since the 1980s. He studied photography at Parsons School of Design. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)\, El Museo del Barrio\, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in San Juan\, and the Paul Robeson Gallery at Rutgers University in Newark. Carle was the founding director of O.P.Art\, the Organization of Puerto Rican Artists\, from 1992 to 2013. His work is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery\, the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art\, El Museo del Barrio\, and The Museum of the City of New York.

SUMMARY:2023 Thanksgiving Turkey Drive & Giveaway Event
DESCRIPTION:Loisaida Inc. together with The Office of New York State Assembly Member Harvey Epstein (NYS Assembly District 74) have partnered again with our community supporters to host the 4th Annual Loisaida Thanksgiving Turkey Drive and Food Giveaway Event\, this year it is scheduled for Monday\, November 20th\, 2023. The funds raised from this event will go directly towards purchasing turkeys and non-perishable food items for families in need who are residing in our diverse neighborhoods. \n\nLast year we raised over $15\,000 in donations and we were able to provide quality food items for over 720 families and individuals living in our community. This year\, with food costs rising\, we want to give even more and have a goal of reaching over 1\,000 poor and low-income families\, older adults and individuals to support them with quality food over this Thanksgiving holiday break! \nWe have partnered again with the East Village Independent Merchant’s Association (EVIMA) to host our fundraiser raffle\, and the funds raised from this event will go directly towards purchasing turkeys and other non-perishable food items. From Wednesday\, November 1st\, 2023 to Wednesday\, November 15th\, 2023 at 11:59pm\, raffle tickets starting from $1-$20 will be on sale to help support this initiative. \nYou can purchase tickets to win any of the 40+ prizes\, which total nearly $5\,000 in value! Raffle prizes include items and gift cards from local small businesses in the Lower East Side/East Village. Each prize will have its own winner and you can purchase tickets for (and possibly win) multiple prizes! All of the proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards purchasing food for our neighbors so please help us by entering the raffle; there are over 15 unique raffle items provided by local small-merchants and businesses and who knows\, you might also be the winner this year!

SUMMARY:Uprooted Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Loisaida Center (710 East 9th Street\, New York\, NY 10009) on Thursday\, October 5th at 6pm for the opening reception of Uprooted! \nUprooted explores the disconnect immigrants\, migrants and the children of immigrants experience in the multitude of spaces and cultures they occupy. We’ve gathered multiple lens-based artists that have developed projects exploring their roots. Through their work\, we are able to see the impact immigration has on people from varying backgrounds. We are able to see the different ways in which artists acknowledge and honor their ancestry. \nThe exhibition highlights themes of identity\, ancestry\, assimilation\, erasure\, and belonging through the lens of multiple New York City based photographers. To RSVP\, contact info@LESPI-NYC.org\n\n\n \n\n\nThis contemporary photography exhibit is based on the work showcased in Lower East Side Preservation Initiative’s photo journal books\, “East Village: Lens on the Lower East Side” and “LES: Lens on the Lower East Side.” These collections of beautiful photographs of the historic East Village/Lower East Side capture the spirit of today’s residents\, workers\, and visitors against a backdrop of the area’s rich and wonderful historic buildings\, and show how the neighborhood’s streets – capes are not only beautiful and irreplaceable\, but also serve to enrich and enliven everyday modern life.\n\n\n \n\n\nLower East Side Preservation Initiative’s – LESPI’s – mission is to preserve Manhattan’s historic Lower East Side by documenting and mapping the area’s historic streetscapes\, increasing awareness of the community’s important history and architecture\, and rallying residents\, city officials\, and the NYC Landmarks Commission to landmark local historic districts and individual buildings. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, September 23rd at 1pm\, artist Leila Mattina will lead an indigo dyeing workshop where participants will learn how to use indigo pigment. Mattina will also facilitate a seed exchange and share instructions for growing indigo in small spaces. \nParticipants are welcome to bring one fabric scrap made of natural fibers for dyeing. Please do not bring large or bulky items like towels or bedding. \nThis workshop is presented on the occasion of the exhibition Geografía(s) del Jiquilite al Añil. \nThis event will take place at the 9th Street Community Garden (703 East 9th Street). In the case of rain\, the event will take place across the street at the Loisaida\, Inc. Center (710 East 9th Street). This event is co-presented by Abrons Arts Center and the Loisaida Center. \nGeografia(s) del Jiquilite al Añil is the first U.S. solo exhibition featuring new work by La Residencia artist Leila Mattina. Para más información contacte The Loisaida Center a info@loisaida.org o (646) 726-4715. \n  \nLet us join our voices for the Fiesta de Cruz in Loisaida\, 2023! \nThe Fiestas de Cruz are a devotional celebration where the Holy Cross is glorified through traditional songs of the Catholic religion that date from the Middle Ages and have been jealously preserved by the simple devotion of the faithful Caribbean devotees of her. \nIn its traditional form\, Las Fiestas de Cruz is celebrated for nine consecutive nights\, in which the Cross is erected on an altar in the form of a nine-step ladder and each night the Cross goes up one step accompanied by the prayers and songs of its devotees. ; until reaching the top on the ninth night. \nThis symbolic ascent of the Cross reminds us of the ascent to Mount Calvary by Our Lord Jesus\, but in the May Cross the Mystery of the Resurrection and Life is emphasized\, by which we also rise from the darkness of ignorance to the light of wisdom. \nRegister to attend here!
