SUMMARY:HABITAR LAS FÁBULAS (PERFORMANCE)
DESCRIPTION:HABITAR LAS FÁBULAS\n\n\n\n\nDescription:\nHabitar las Fábulas is a series of dance performances inspired by the visual art series Fábulas by Uruguayan artist Fernanda Piñeirua. Through movement\, we share women’s stories—of patriarchy\, migration\, ancestry\, community\, struggle\, union\, self-love\, and death.\n\n\nThis project is both dialogue and tribute: a collective recomposition of Latin American women’s experiences. From image to gesture\, the performances draw symbolic foundations from the Orixas dances of Brazilian Candomblé\, the rhythms of Uruguayan candombe\, the steps of Argentinian chacarera\, and the language of Afro-Latin contemporary dance. \nEach body becomes a question\, a vessel for memory and resistance\, a way of telling what words alone cannot hold. These dances invite the audience into empathy\, trusting that the stories of South American women will resonate and echo in their own personal narratives\, weaving a sense of shared community. \n\n\nAbout Simbólica Cia. de Danza: \nSimbólica is a Sudaka Latinafrocontemporary dance company that creates from the symbolic intersections of movement and knowledge. We dance to question what we believe\, feel\, and think—transforming body and emotion into tools for inquiry where the mind alone cannot reach. Our practice is rooted in regenerating\, strengthening\, and empowering both personal and collective identity. \nMaría Noel Costa (Uruguay) is a dancer\, choreographer\, and teacher with training in jazz\, modern\, African\, and contemporary dance. A three-time recipient of the Regional Fund for Culture\, her works include I Have Something to Say and Morder. \nPaula Sarmiento Ansorena (Argentina/Uruguay) is a dancer\, researcher\, and director whose creations blend traditional and contemporary Afro-Latin American dances. She has trained in Brazil\, Guinea\, Mexico\, and New York\, and is the director of Simbólica Cia. de Danza and member of Yiribas Cia. \nGuest Artist: Mobéy Lola Irizarry (Puerto Rican diaspora/Chickasaw Nation) is a genderqueer cultural worker and multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans sound\, image\, and performance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation: Loisaida\, Inc.-710 E 9th St\, New York\, 10009\n\n\n\n\nPraxis & Lab: 3:00 PM (Register here)\n\nPerformance: 7:00 PM (Register here)

SUMMARY:Ecolibrium Community Meeting: Solar and Batteries in Public Spaces
DESCRIPTION:Ecolibrium Community Meeting: Solar and Batteries in Public Spaces\nDate: April 24\, 2025\n⏰ Time: 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM\nLocation: Loisaida Center\, 710 East 9th St\, NYC 10009\nJoin us for the next Ecolibrium Community Meeting\, where we’ll explore the role of solar energy and battery storage in public spaces and their integration into a community-scale Virtual Power Plant (VPP). This initiative connects solar and battery installations in public parks\, community centers\, and shared spaces with residential and commercial buildings\, creating a more resilient\, efficient\, and sustainable urban energy network. \nAt our last meeting\, we introduced the Virtual Power Plant (VPP) concept\, showcasing how distributed energy resources (DERs) can work together to support a decentralized\, clean energy grid. This session will dive deeper into the practical applications of solar and battery systems in public spaces\, highlighting their role in reducing emissions\, enhancing grid reliability\, and providing backup power during outages. \nWe’ll also provide an overview of Ecolibrium’s paid summer internship program\, which offers hands-on experience in engineering\, data science\, IT & cybersecurity\, environment\, digital arts\, media\, and economics—preparing students for careers in the green economy while working with our community to create a vision for a climate resilient future in the LES. \nLoisaida Center’s Ecolibrium program is committed to energy and climate justice\, empowering local talent to design and implement innovative sustainability solutions. By merging technical expertise\, creative problem-solving\, and community-centered action\, the program fosters the next generation of leaders in urban sustainability. \nBe part of the conversation—help shape the future of community energy!\nThis initiative is made possible through the generous support of Con Edison\, the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (Ladders for Leaders)\, CUNY Career Corps\, NY State Dept. of Environmental Conservation\, and the U.S. Department of Education/Congressional Community Project Funding.

SUMMARY:Bombazo Pa' Marién
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday\, March 22nd\, from 4:00 – 8:00 pm\, we will be having a Bombazo for Marién at the Loisaida Center to be in the community\, play bomba music\, pray\, and fundraise for her recovery. \nMarién  Torres Lopez is the founder of Taller Tambuyé and co-founder of the all-womyn Bomba group Ausuba\, Barrileras de 8m\, and has dedicated her life to learning and teaching Bomba dance and drum and the history of resistance that has been kept alive through this Afro-Boricua tradition. \nSo many have learned from her and been blessed by her cultural work and commitment to liberation. She also inherited the Encuentro de Tambores de Bomba from Norma Salazar and has been organizing the event since Norma’s passing. She was diagnosed with Breast Cancer last year and is going through a very costly and difficult healing journey. \nWe want her to feel the love from NYC and receive more funds to support her medical bills as she has been unable to work. \nThis event is open to all and donation-based. We will be collecting funds to send to Marién\, and all are encouraged to give what they can. However\, no one will be turned away for lack of funds\, as Bomba and prayers are for all.

SUMMARY:What is a Virtual Power Plant? 2025 Ecolibrium Presentation & Meeting at Loisaida Center
DESCRIPTION:Join our Ecolibrium team at the Loisaida Center on (February 25\, 6 to 8 pm) for a presentation and visioning meeting that explores the transformation of our energy system from the old centralized static fossil-fueled electric grid\, to a responsive and participatory all-electric one serviced by distributed renewable energy resources (DER) and batteries. \nWe will present the concept of a community-scale “Virtual Power Plant” where solar and battery systems installed on buildings and in public spaces are coordinated and synchronized to behave as a single larger system. We will learn about “grid-interactive buildings”\, electric vehicle-to-building-to-grid charging\, community microgrids\, demand reduction and response\, and how these systems benefit residents\, building owners\, create jobs\, reduce building emissions\, relieve stress on the electric grid\, and provide resilient power to buildings during grid outages. \nThis program is made possible through the generous support from Con Edison\, NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (Ladders for Leaders)\, CUNY Career Corps\, NY State Dept. of Environmental Conservation\, U.S. Department of Education/Congressional Community Project Funding. \nImage design by: Grace Ballo \n  \nRSVP Link \n\nSponsors and Partners:

SUMMARY:Street Life (Opening Reception)
DESCRIPTION:Street Life\nQueer Activism\, Performance\, and Joy \nThe Photography of Luis Carle\nIn this exhibition\, the noted New York Puerto Rican photographer Luis Carle honors the street—the work of protest\, resistance\, remembrance\, critical gender performance\, and celebration with which queer subjects have infused public spaces\, transforming them. Inspired by the Nuyorican street activist Sylvia Rivera\, who advocated for radical\, gender non-conforming\, intersectional queer communities; Cristina Hayworth\, founder of Puerto Rico’s LGBTQ Pride March; the gender performance artist Oswaldo Gómez\, Ms. Colombia\, who converted city streets into his backstage dressing-room for “cosmically” reimagining everyday life; and Dirty Martini\, whose witty performances critique commercialization and gentrification at a time of imperiled queer civil rights; Carle invites the viewers to join the crowd\, march\, walk\, ride\, dance and put their bodies on the line. Moving from images of the legendary marches on Washington for LGBTQ civil rights\, the AIDS Memorial Quilt\, ACT-UP activism\, and the NYC Drag March to everyday street performances\, performance art\, and celebrations\, Carle’s photographs ask us to reflect on how protest\, performance\, memorialization\, and joy have historically built on each other in queer popular cultures. \nLuis Carle (b. 1962) is a New York-based Puerto Rican photographer living in New York City since the 1980s. He studied photography at Parsons School of Design. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)\, El Museo del Barrio\, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in San Juan\, and the Paul Robeson Gallery at Rutgers University in Newark. Carle was the founding director of O.P.Art\, the Organization of Puerto Rican Artists\, from 1992 to 2013. His work is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery\, the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art\, El Museo del Barrio\, and The Museum of the City of New York.

SUMMARY:2023 Thanksgiving Turkey Drive & Giveaway Event

The funds raised from this event will go directly towards purchasing turkeys and non-perishable food items for families in need who are residing in our diverse neighborhoods. \n\nLast year we raised over $15\,000 in donations and we were able to provide quality food items for over 720 families and individuals living in our community. This year\, with food costs rising\, we want to give even more and have a goal of reaching over 1\,000 poor and low-income families\, older adults and individuals to support them with quality food over this Thanksgiving holiday break! \nWe have partnered again with the East Village Independent Merchant’s Association (EVIMA) to host our fundraiser raffle\, and the funds raised from this event will go directly towards purchasing turkeys and other non-perishable food items. From Wednesday\, November 1st\, 2023 to Wednesday\, November 15th\, 2023 at 11:59pm\, raffle tickets starting from $1-$20 will be on sale to help support this initiative. \nYou can purchase tickets to win any of the 40+ prizes\, which total nearly $5\,000 in value! Raffle prizes include items and gift cards from local small businesses in the Lower East Side/East Village. Each prize will have its own winner and you can purchase tickets for (and possibly win) multiple prizes! All of the proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards purchasing food for our neighbors so please help us by entering the raffle; there are over 15 unique raffle items provided by local small-merchants and businesses and who knows\, you might also be the winner this year!
