DESCRIPTION:GARBAGIA UNIVERSE\nOverview: Garbagia Project is Loisaida’s Summer Program\, a series of free open community workshops with a focus on creating art with recycled materials. This year’s edition Garbagia Universe expands its horizons\, it will consist of a 3 week intensive workshop completely FREE for all ages. \nEach week participants will be creating art with recycled materials using a different approach; 1st week will be sewing and costume design workshop. 2nd week will be sculpture\, drawing and painting workshop. 3rd week will be a collective performance and movement workshop. \n\n\n1st week – Patterns\, Sewing & Costumes\nMonday\, August 21st – Friday\, August 25th from 4:00pm – 10:00pm \nParticipants will learn basic machine sewing and reading of a pattern. While designing and creating their own costume\, we will work on creative stimulation\, repurposing of materials that can become fabric. Invited artist; Sonia Peña will direct 2 hours of workshops each day to learn mending and alterations. These classes will help in the development of a costume and while creating it\, participants will learn basic\, practical and useful techniques for everyday life. \nInstructor: Daniele Fabrizi \n\n\n2nd week – Painting\, Sculpture & Drawing\nMonday\, August 28th – Friday\, September 1st from 4:00pm – 10:00pm \nThis workshop will focus on the development of sculptural elements that add visual force and meaning to the garments made in the 1st week of the Garbagia Universe workshops mostly of recycled materials. Participants will study traditional clothing from different indigenous cultures in Latin America\, Africa\, and Asia\, containing symbols of the universe (such as the Sun\, Mother Earth\, Planets\, Stars\, etc.) With these visual and theoretical sources as inspiration\, participants will sketch their own sculptural designs. \nInstructor: Juan Bautista-Climent \n\n\n3rd week – Movement\, Performance & Dance\nTuesday\, September 5th – Friday\, September 8th from 4:00pm – 10:00pm \nDuring the last week of Garbagia Universe Program the participants will have the opportunity to develop their character in a collaborative manner. Performance\, body movement and character workshops will be held in order to develop the Performance for the event. Center and Afro-Inspira presents: \nMerengue Prieto New York 2017 \nMarily Gallardo\, choreographer/artivist and founder of Kalalú Danza Artes Escénicas\, has come from Dominican Republic to share with us her work and provide a master dance class\, interactive talk and healing circle. All funds are to support Kalalú Danza Project in keep moving forward their mission and work in Los Mercedes\, Dominican Republic. \nYou are coordially invited to: \nMASTER DANCE CLASS: Merengue Prieto / rhythm dance session – traveling steps with TAMBORA. Incorporate another perspective that focuses on the origins of popular tradition and its makers through the execution of poly rhythmic-gestural patterns and to enjoy “merengue” afro. \nINTERACTIVE TALK: “Mujeres de la Candela” (Women of the Fire) / pedagogical experience on identity and black women power such as how women power and values are transmitted within the afro-descendant communities\, like courage\, daily intelligence\, and spiritual beliefs\, etc. \nHEALING RITUAL: Creative full moon circle. \nClass starts prompltly at 5pm followed by talk and healing circle.\nSuggested Donation: $25\nThis event is FREE\, no one will be turned away for lack of funds. From that premise\, Kalalú’s pedagogical approach affirms a particular study of rhythm and movement\, of its oral tradition\, and symbolism which influenced by “the Afro” can be found in the popular artistic manifestations of such cultures. Such artistic manifestations provides the basis to generate performance\, scenic\, and pedagogical proposals which contributes to the development of the local communities as well as the individual and social transformation.

Fundraiser to help people affected by #hurricaneMaria in #PR and in solidarity with the evento Verde Luz artistic movement. \nAbrazARTE is proud to present a showcase between local and international artists who love Puerto Rico and its people. \nPlease join us on Saturday to raise funds by those gravely affected. We will present an art auction\, theater\, poetry\, and music\, with ongoing projections of performances from the Puerto Rican Diaspora from all over the world. \nComplementary food & drink by Port Morris Distillery from 6-7pm. \nWe are partnering with Eco Kit Puerto Rico\, an ecological platform for responsible relief donations that respond to the island’s geography\, weather conditions\, contamination\, waste management \, and infrastructure.
