Our newest release features Carlos “Chino” Garcia\, co-founder of the East Village’s CHARAS El Bohio Cultural and Community Center. \nChino will join us in conversation with Bonnie Sue Stein\, Executive and Artistic Director of GOH Productions. They will discuss Chino’s life and activism\, from youth and migrant communities in the 1950s to the education-focused Real Great Society\, the founding of CHARAS in the 1970s\, and more. \nCHARAS first built domes in collaboration with Buckminster Fuller in 1972. Artist and scholar Matthew Mottel will present his short documentary about CHARAS based on archival footage ofSeyus Mottel (his father)\, working on the Improbable Dome Builders. \nThis event is fully accessible. \nFree. DESCRIPTION:Direct from Puerto Rico\, Giovani Roberto\, an organizer with Centro de Apoyo Mutuo – CAM (Center of Mutual Support)\, Caguas\, will be discussing how its projects and others\, are creating alternative solutions to meet the basic sustenance needs of the Puerto Rican people after Hurricane Maria. Other speakers include Melissa Fuster\, Professor of Public Health Nutrition at Brooklyn College\, and Huascar Robles\, author/journalist/producer of Catatonia podcast. \n\nCentral Ethic \nThrough implementing CAM principles of “ayuda mutua y esfuerzo propio” (mutual help and self-effort) the process of creating a new\, regenerative Puerto Rico and allowing a return of the island’s vitality. CAM principles function in contrast to the legacy of colonial policies which continue to eliminate public services and infrastructure\, and compromise natural resources for the exclusive benefit of private interests. The ethic of ‘mutual help and self effort’ has proven effective in creating a viable\, alternative solution or the people of Puerto Rico\, as evidenced by the increasing interest of participants and volunteers received daily in service to the CAM. \nBackground & Growth \nCentro de Apoyo Mutuo ~ Caguas\, appeared 8 days after the passing of Hurricane Maria\, occupying abandoned space\, providing services such as meals\, material resources\, acupuncture and alternative therapies\, and workshops to the public while receiving support from local community volunteers\, and later from supporters outside the island. \nWeeks after the Centro de Apoyo Mutuo started in Caguas\, several groups and individuals across the island helped organize CAMs in their communities\, following the call for collective action to island activists and progressive groups\, resulting in 8 CAM’s throughout the main island\, including 1 on the island of Vieques. Currently there are 8 CAMs\, some with a peoples kitchen\, some with agro-ecological projects\, workshops\, alternative community educational projects\, and acupuncture and therapeutic spaces. \n\n**Giovanni Roberto is a Puerto Rican social justice activist and organizer for the Center for Political\, Educational and Cultural Development (CDPEC) based in Caguas\, Puerto Rico. Roberto is a former student leader of the 2010-2011 mobilizations and strikes at the University of Puerto Rico. \nMelissa Fuster is an assistant professor of Public Health Nutrition at the City University of New York Brooklyn College. Her current research addresses the sociopolitical and cultural factors affecting culinary and nutritional outcomes in the Hispanic Caribbean region and its transnational communities in the US. Previous to joining Brooklyn College\, Prof. Fuster was a Provostial Faculty Fellow in Food Studies at New York University.

DESCRIPTION:Loisaida Inc. and the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation are proud to present: \nOurs to Lose: When Squatters Became Homeowners in New York City\n\nThe Lower East Side in the 1980s and 90s was home to a radical squatting movement that\nblended urban homesteading and European-style squatting in a way never before seen in the\nUnited States. \n\nOurs to Lose takes a close look at a diverse group of Lower East Side squatters who occupied abandoned city-owned buildings in the 1980s\, fought to keep them for decades\, and eventually began a long\, complicated process to turn their illegal occupancy into legal cooperative ownership.\n\nIn this multimedia event Starecheski will use oral histories to explore the complicated\nrelationships between homesteading and squatting on the Lower East Side\, and in American\nhistory. \n\nAmy Starecheski is co-director of the Oral History Master of Arts program at Columbia\nUniversity. She received a PhD in cultural anthropology from the CUNY Graduate Center\, where\nshe was a Public Humanities Fellow. In 2016 she was awarded the “Will the Next Margaret\nMead Please Stand Up?” Prize for public anthropological writing.

He has been a fellow of CantoMundo\, the Bronx Council on the Arts\, and the Ford Foundation\, and his creative and critical writings have appeared in Latino Studies\, Contemporary Literature\, Small Axe\, Bomb\, Fence\, and in numerous national and international anthologies. Originally from San Juan\, Puerto Rico\, Urayoán Noel earned his B.A. from the University of Puerto Rico\, Río Piedras\, his M.A. from Stanford\, and his Ph.D. from NYU. A former CantoMundo and Ford Foundation fellow\, he has two books forthcoming: Buzzing Hemisphere / Rumor Hemisférico (University of Arizona Press) and a bilingual edition of the poetry of Pablo de Rokha (Shearsman Books). He lives in the Bronx and is the poetry editor of NACLA Report on the Americas.\n\nOmar Pérez has consistently translated from the English\, Italian\, French and Dutch languages. He has published\, among others\, a (Cuban) Spanish version of Shakespeare ́s As You Like It: Como les Guste; a translation of Dylan Thomas ́s Collected Poems; an anthology of XX Century Italian poetry (L ́Antimelancólico)\, a collection of Anglophone African poetry (Mágicos Intervalos) as well as (Lo que es) an anthology of Dutch verse. Numerous translations of poems\, short stories and novels from the above mentioned languages\, have been publishedin Cuba and abroad.\n\n\nOmar Pérez has collaborated in the theatre\, both as an actor and musician. He has thus participated in festivals such as Villa e Castelle\, Regione Marche\, Italy\, 1996\, or Bienal de Danza del Caribe\, Havana\, 2008 and 2010.\nHe has interacted with several actors\, musicians and dancers in plays\, performances\, happenings in Cuba and Europe.\nAs a poet\, Pérez has participated in festivals such as Poetry International\, Rotterdam\, 2002\, and Festival de Poesía de Medellín\, in 2006.\n\n\nEdwin Torres is the author of many poetry collections\, including most recently “Ameriscopia” (University of Arizona Press). He’s the founder of The Noricua Movement and has been a leaky fixture in the New York City poetry community for over two decades. SUMMARY:Sense of the Lense: the Photography of Marlis Momber & Lisa Kahane
DESCRIPTION:  \nTHE LOISAIDA CENTER \n  \nIS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE: \n\nSENSE OF THE LENSE: \nREGARDING URBAN RESURGENCE AND SURVIVAL IN THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF: \nMARLIS MOMBER & LISA KAHANE \n\nSimultaneously but unknown to each other\, Lisa Kahane and Marlis Momber documented the life of people and places caught in cycles of urban disinvestment in the 70s and 80s in shattered\, depopulated neighborhoods in the South Bronx and in Loisaida\, a self-defined neighborhood of the Lower East Side in Manhattan. Both women remain involved in each community to this day. However\, both areas are rendered unrecognizable today\, due to successful rebuilding led by community groups and churches\, homesteaders\, and federal\, state\, and city assistance; shifting immigration patterns; and a new influx of capital. Through the twin lenses of photography and social practice\, this discussion and exhibit will explore the conditions that catalyzed their unique views and engagement with these two symbiotic neighborhoods. \n  \nMs. Momber and Ms. Kahane both document the history and conditions of each place at the same time. John Grierson\, the Scottish filmmaker who first coined the term documentary\, wrote in 1946 that “It is a basic tenet of documentary theory that the primary search is not for beauty\, but for the fact of the matter\, and that in the fact of the matter is the only path to beauty that will not soon wear down.” On the other hand\, the meaning of photographs is mutable. Sontag wrote in 1977 that “the particular qualities and intentions of photographs tend to be swallowed up in the generalized pathos of time past.” How do these photographs read today\, especially in light of the social changes and physical evolution of each place depicted? \nThis discussion will also consider the circumstances that originally opened each place to work in. How did and does each photographer engage with people and groups\, including local Puerto Rican activist communities\, and what alliances did each photographer forge with other artists and peers? How does the personal\, including gender\, affect approach\, alliances\, method and regard? And is there a specific connection between what we now call social practice and photography? \nMarlis Momber and Lisa Kahane will be introduced by Amy Westpfahl and Laura Napier\, artists and photographers who live and work on the Lower East Side and in the South Bronx today.
