DESCRIPTION:Street Life\nQueer Activism\, Performance\, and Joy \nThe Photography of Luis Carle\nIn this exhibition\, the noted New York Puerto Rican photographer Luis Carle honors the street—the work of protest\, resistance\, remembrance\, critical gender performance\, and celebration with which queer subjects have infused public spaces\, transforming them. Inspired by the Nuyorican street activist Sylvia Rivera\, who advocated for radical\, gender non-conforming\, intersectional queer communities; Cristina Hayworth\, founder of Puerto Rico’s LGBTQ Pride March; the gender performance artist Oswaldo Gómez\, Ms. Colombia\, who converted city streets into his backstage dressing-room for “cosmically” reimagining everyday life; and Dirty Martini\, whose witty performances critique commercialization and gentrification at a time of imperiled queer civil rights; Carle invites the viewers to join the crowd\, march\, walk\, ride\, dance and put their bodies on the line. Moving from images of the legendary marches on Washington for LGBTQ civil rights\, the AIDS Memorial Quilt\, ACT-UP activism\, and the NYC Drag March to everyday street performances\, performance art\, and celebrations\, Carle’s photographs ask us to reflect on how protest\, performance\, memorialization\, and joy have historically built on each other in queer popular cultures. \nLuis Carle (b. 1962) is a New York-based Puerto Rican photographer living in New York City since the 1980s. He studied photography at Parsons School of Design. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)\, El Museo del Barrio\, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in San Juan\, and the Paul Robeson Gallery at Rutgers University in Newark. Carle was the founding director of O.P.Art\, the Organization of Puerto Rican Artists\, from 1992 to 2013. His work is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery\, the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art\, El Museo del Barrio\, and The Museum of the City of New York.

DESCRIPTION:Las Caras Lindas\nA Journey through Nuyorican and Puerto Rican Salsa Album Art of the Last Century \nCo-curated by: Pablo Yglesias & José “Pepe” Flores \nDate: February 23 through March 15\, 2024 \nLocation: Centro de Estudiantes\, University of Puerto Rico – Rio Piedras Campus (Puerto Rico) \nLas Caras Lindas explores the visual and social impact of Latin music album covers during the period when the vinyl LP was a dominant format of entertainment\, paying critical attention to issues of identity\, sense of place\, African roots\, faith\, rhythm\, dance\, and the body\, as well as graphic aesthetics\, through representations of Hispanic people and cultures as they are presented to the consumer\, with an emphasis on Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rican diaspora in New York. \nThemes of oppression and resistance\, suffering and pleasure\, erasure and pride\, and utilizing creativity to fight against colonization\, marginalization\, and poverty are opposites held in tension and constant flux in these humble squares. The sequence of covers is meant to trace a process of constant ebb and flow of evolution over five decades during the second half of the twentieth century. \nThe title of the show comes from a song of the same name\, composed by Catalino “Tite” Curet Alonso\, and recorded by Ismael Rivera Y Sus Cachimbos for the album “Esto Es Lo Mío” (This Is Mine). Inspired by exhibition co-curator Pablo Yglesias’s book Cocinando: 50 Years of Latin Album Cover Art\, this installation weaves a narrative through the display of album art\, proposing that the record cover is not just an invitation to dance\, sing\, dine\, and love\, but is also an art piece worthy of serious cultural consideration. The premise is that album art is not just mass-produced ephemera that should be relegated to the dustbin of a bygone era but rather a unique 12 x 12-inch window into the soul of a culture. \nThis collaboration is made possible by the generous support of the Mellon Foundation\, Tiznando el País\, and the Instituto Interdisciplinario y Multicultural (INIM) at the University of Puerto Rico\,

SUMMARY:2023 Thanksgiving Turkey Drive & Giveaway Event
DESCRIPTION:Loisaida Inc. together with The Office of New York State Assembly Member Harvey Epstein (NYS Assembly District 74) have partnered again with our community supporters to host the 4th Annual Loisaida Thanksgiving Turkey Drive and Food Giveaway Event\, this year it is scheduled for Monday\, November 20th\, 2023. The funds raised from this event will go directly towards purchasing turkeys and non-perishable food items for families in need who are residing in our diverse neighborhoods. \n\nLast year we raised over $15\,000 in donations and we were able to provide quality food items for over 720 families and individuals living in our community. This year\, with food costs rising\, we want to give even more and have a goal of reaching over 1\,000 poor and low-income families\, older adults and individuals to support them with quality food over this Thanksgiving holiday break! \nWe have partnered again with the East Village Independent Merchant’s Association (EVIMA) to host our fundraiser raffle\, and the funds raised from this event will go directly towards purchasing turkeys and other non-perishable food items. From Wednesday\, November 1st\, 2023 to Wednesday\, November 15th\, 2023 at 11:59pm\, raffle tickets starting from $1-$20 will be on sale to help support this initiative. \nYou can purchase tickets to win any of the 40+ prizes\, which total nearly $5\,000 in value! Raffle prizes include items and gift cards from local small businesses in the Lower East Side/East Village. Each prize will have its own winner and you can purchase tickets for (and possibly win) multiple prizes! All of the proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards purchasing food for our neighbors so please help us by entering the raffle; there are over 15 unique raffle items provided by local small-merchants and businesses and who knows\, you might also be the winner this year!

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Loisaida Center (710 East 9th Street\, New York\, NY 10009) on Thursday\, October 5th at 6pm for the opening reception of Uprooted! \nUprooted explores the disconnect immigrants\, migrants and the children of immigrants experience in the multitude of spaces and cultures they occupy. We’ve gathered multiple lens-based artists that have developed projects exploring their roots. Through their work\, we are able to see the impact immigration has on people from varying backgrounds. We are able to see the different ways in which artists acknowledge and honor their ancestry. \nThe exhibition highlights themes of identity\, ancestry\, assimilation\, erasure\, and belonging through the lens of multiple New York City based photographers. DESCRIPTION:You are cordially invited to the 2nd Annual DYCD Spring Into Health Signature Event on Friday June 30\, 2023 at Lower Highland Park in Brooklyn\, NY from 11am-4pm. \nThe signature DYCD Spring into Health Signature Event\, is a gathering of local community members and organizations that provide services for the sole purpose of building bridges between residents and community organizations. The campaign is meant to raise awareness\, provide access\, and share resources necessary to promote health equity across the five boroughs of New York City. \nThe event will have a number of City\, State and Private vendors tabling and the following Activities:\nTennis\, Zumba\, Basketball\, Yoga\, Music(DJ)\, Food\, Smoothie Station\, Step and more… \nThis event is open to all Community residents and Program Participants. DESCRIPTION:In its 22nd year\, the Museum at Eldridge Street’s Egg Rolls\, Egg Creams\, and Empanadas Street Festival is a celebration of the diverse traditions that give the Lower East Side and Chinatown its identity. \nEmbrace the spirit of this ever-changing neighborhood and its rich immigration history with the Museum’s magnificent home\, the 1887 landmark Eldridge Street Synagogue\, as the backdrop. The festival fills Eldridge Street with a medley of Jewish\, Chinese\, and Puerto Rican tastes\, sights\, sounds\, and crafts for folks of all ages to enjoy! This festival is free to attend\, and all are welcome! \nRegistration preferred but not necessary.
