The Loisaida Center has been instrumental in bringing visibility to the many histories of the Latinx resistance in New York. The issue-based timelines construct a network of solidarity between individuals and institutions in the Lower East Side. \nAn examination of participatory practices in New York City reveals the critical relationship between real estate\, architecture and activism. In cities across the country\, in the 1970’s\, the devaluation of property created a vacuum of ownership. Vacant lots\, storefronts\, schoolhouses\, factories and abandoned tenements in New York City became havens for experimental\, communal practices. These same urban landscapes\, in the present time\, face the opposite crisis of inflated costs and high-profit development. Escalating speculation threatens the small gains made by communities in historically marginalized neighborhoods. Amid current debates about urban justice and access to the city\, Activist Estates critically re-evaluates the place of counter-institutional practices that shape the landscape of New York City. \nAbout: \nNandini Bagchee is an Associate Professor at the Spitzer School of Architecture at CCNY (CUNY) and principal of Bagchee Architects. Her research focuses on activism in architecture and the ways in which ground-up collaborative building practices provide an alternative medium for the creation of public space. The sequence of covers is meant to trace a process of constant ebb and flow of evolution over five decades during the second half of the twentieth century. \nThe title of the show comes from a song of the same name\, composed by Catalino “Tite” Curet Alonso\, and recorded by Ismael Rivera Y Sus Cachimbos for the album “Esto Es Lo Mío” (This Is Mine). Inspired by exhibition co-curator Pablo Yglesias’s book Cocinando: 50 Years of Latin Album Cover Art\, this installation weaves a narrative through the display of album art\, proposing that the record cover is not just an invitation to dance\, sing\, dine\, and love\, but is also an art piece worthy of serious cultural consideration.
