DESCRIPTION:Overview:\nEvent producer and musician Jocelyn Bonadio-de Freitas\, has organized a series of three events premiering at Loisaida Inc. Center from March through September. The events will take place simultaneously at Loisaida Inc. on the Lower East Side and at the new :Pública art space in Santurce\, Puerto Rico. \nDescription:\nThe third event organized by the artist for her residency will center around the theme of protest. Through an interactive “open studio” style conversation with guests at partnering nonprofit Cultural organization :Pública in Puerto Rico\, attendees and participants will explore and think critically about recent Puerto Rican protests\, that lead to the resignation of their governor. Our guests will also break bread\, and enjoy a live music performance and debut song by Jocelyn. Through complex\, relevant topics like food (in)justice\, renewable energy\, colonialism\, protest\, education\, and privatization\, the events seek to explore the ways in which Culture is informing and reshaping protest in the 21st century. Quotidian life now incorporates meaningful protest for the Puerto Rican diaspora\, with a constant exchange of information\, strategy and resources reinforced by their roots on the island. Each event will feature educational\, engaging speakers\, and live performances. \n\nPresented as part of the Loisaida Inc. Center AIR Program. DESCRIPTION:Las Caras Lindas\nA Journey through Nuyorican and Puerto Rican Salsa Album Art of the Last Century \nCo-curated by: Pablo Yglesias & José “Pepe” Flores \nDate: February 23 through March 15\, 2024 \nLocation: Centro de Estudiantes\, University of Puerto Rico – Rio Piedras Campus (Puerto Rico) \nLas Caras Lindas explores the visual and social impact of Latin music album covers during the period when the vinyl LP was a dominant format of entertainment\, paying critical attention to issues of identity\, sense of place\, African roots\, faith\, rhythm\, dance\, and the body\, as well as graphic aesthetics\, through representations of Hispanic people and cultures as they are presented to the consumer\, with an emphasis on Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rican diaspora in New York. \nThemes of oppression and resistance\, suffering and pleasure\, erasure and pride\, and utilizing creativity to fight against colonization\, marginalization\, and poverty are opposites held in tension and constant flux in these humble squares. The sequence of covers is meant to trace a process of constant ebb and flow of evolution over five decades during the second half of the twentieth century. \nThe title of the show comes from a song of the same name\, composed by Catalino “Tite” Curet Alonso\, and recorded by Ismael Rivera Y Sus Cachimbos for the album “Esto Es Lo Mío” (This Is Mine). Inspired by exhibition co-curator Pablo Yglesias’s book Cocinando: 50 Years of Latin Album Cover Art\, this installation weaves a narrative through the display of album art\, proposing that the record cover is not just an invitation to dance\, sing\, dine\, and love\, but is also an art piece worthy of serious cultural consideration. The premise is that album art is not just mass-produced ephemera that should be relegated to the dustbin of a bygone era but rather a unique 12 x 12-inch window into the soul of a culture. \nThis collaboration is made possible by the generous support of the Mellon Foundation\, Tiznando el País\, and the Instituto Interdisciplinario y Multicultural (INIM) at the University of Puerto Rico\,

DESCRIPTION:Street Life\nQueer Activism\, Performance\, and Joy \nThe Photography of Luis Carle\nIn this exhibition\, the noted New York Puerto Rican photographer Luis Carle honors the street—the work of protest\, resistance\, remembrance\, critical gender performance\, and celebration with which queer subjects have infused public spaces\, transforming them. Inspired by the Nuyorican street activist Sylvia Rivera\, who advocated for radical\, gender non-conforming\, intersectional queer communities; Cristina Hayworth\, founder of Puerto Rico’s LGBTQ Pride March; the gender performance artist Oswaldo Gómez\, Ms. Colombia\, who converted city streets into his backstage dressing-room for “cosmically” reimagining everyday life; and Dirty Martini\, whose witty performances critique commercialization and gentrification at a time of imperiled queer civil rights; Carle invites the viewers to join the crowd\, march\, walk\, ride\, dance and put their bodies on the line. Moving from images of the legendary marches on Washington for LGBTQ civil rights\, the AIDS Memorial Quilt\, ACT-UP activism\, and the NYC Drag March to everyday street performances\, performance art\, and celebrations\, Carle’s photographs ask us to reflect on how protest\, performance\, memorialization\, and joy have historically built on each other in queer popular cultures. \nLuis Carle (b. 1962) is a New York-based Puerto Rican photographer living in New York City since the 1980s. He studied photography at Parsons School of Design. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)\, El Museo del Barrio\, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in San Juan\, and the Paul Robeson Gallery at Rutgers University in Newark. Carle was the founding director of O.P.Art\, the Organization of Puerto Rican Artists\, from 1992 to 2013. His work is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery\, the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art\, El Museo del Barrio\, and The Museum of the City of New York.
