In
the 1980s, the East Village was a very different place than it is
now. A filthy, often dangerous, sometimes wonderful neighborhood, whose cheap housing
became a
magnet for an eclectic mix of people who valued experimentation with art, music,
drugs and life, over decent living conditions.
This website is about the
East Village as it was in the decade preceding
the Tompkins Square riots of 1987.
It's been created as an adjunct to a multimedia installation that will combine slides and a soundtrack of edited interviews and music. This site contains: 1) a slide show that will give an idea of the final project; 2) an archive of photos and interviews; 3) an email system that will allow anyone interested to add their own memories to the archives.
